Welcome!

Thank you for visiting The Haley Hiatus, aka Travels with Barkley, where we're tracking our year-long 2010 travel adventure. We'll post pictures and journal entries as we travel the country by a wandering route from Pennsylvania to, ultimately, Alaska and back. If our trip captures your interest, please stop in occasionally to see what we're up to.

Clicking on a photo will make it larger and clearer. For most of the pictures, once the bigger picture comes up, clicking on it again will make it even larger.

Hoover Dam

April 27th: The Hoover Dam is spectacular! It was built from 1931 through 1935 (during the Depression!) on the Colorado River on the Arizona - Nevada border. Situated in the Black Canyon, the dam created Lake Meade, produces hydroelectric power, and is part of a system intended to provide a steady supply of water to the western states that rely on the Colorado River and its tributaries. As fantastic as the dam is, it appears to be dwarfed by the Colorado River Bridge being built across Black Canyon. Apparently, when the bridge is complete, traffic will be rerouted to the new bridge and will no longer be allowed on top of the dam.

Hoover Dam and angled electric towers:

On the downstream side of the dam, water used to produce electricity:

The bronze Winged Figures of the Republic are 30 feet tall and are part of the dam's dedication monument (on the Nevada side of the water). The Art Deco statues are reminiscent of men, angels and eagles.

Memorial to the (96?) workers who died building the dam:
