April 27th: The Hoover Dam is spectacular! It was built from 1931 through 1935 (during the Depression!) on the Colorado River on the Arizona - Nevada border. Situated in the Black Canyon, the dam created Lake Meade, produces hydroelectric power, and is part of a system intended to provide a steady supply of water to the western states that rely on the Colorado River and its tributaries. As fantastic as the dam is, it appears to be dwarfed by the Colorado River Bridge being built across Black Canyon. Apparently, when the bridge is complete, traffic will be rerouted to the new bridge and will no longer be allowed on top of the dam.

The bronze Winged Figures of the Republic are 30 feet tall and are part of the dam's dedication monument (on the Nevada side of the water). The Art Deco statues are reminiscent of men, angels and eagles.
