April 1st: From Surprise and Glendale, we moved to Cottonwood AZ and stayed in Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The view from our back window:
A group on horseback went by soon after we settled in.
The weather changes quickly in Arizona. We set out to hike a nearby trail a few minutes after the horses passed, and two minutes later we fought high winds and driving rain to make it back home. Even at 2000 pounds heavier than the Catalina, the Sabre was buffeted by the wind. It was a long night.
The next day, we wound our way up the mountain we watched from our back window and ended up in Jerome, an old mining town. It somehow missed our trip-planning radar, but it seems to be a popular destination, and we could see why. It was worth the trip just to see the buildings cling to the hills. Old buildings now house art shops, cafes, and wineries. Jewelry, paintings, drawings, pottery, glass art and many other creations by local artists are sold in the shops, and carefully-chosen imported items are offered here and there, as well. Petrified wood, local crystals, and local foods, including prickly pear jelly, were also available. Several artists sold their wares where a long-gone building once stood.
