Welcome!

Thank you for visiting The Haley Hiatus, aka Travels with Barkley, where we're tracking our year-long 2010 travel adventure. We'll post pictures and journal entries as we travel the country by a wandering route from Pennsylvania to, ultimately, Alaska and back. If our trip captures your interest, please stop in occasionally to see what we're up to.

Clicking on a photo will make it larger and clearer. For most of the pictures, once the bigger picture comes up, clicking on it again will make it even larger.

Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park is beautiful! We were there May 3d, and lovely wildflowers bloomed all along the road as it climbed through the Sierra Nevadas.

Lupines:

Fiddleneck:

Canyon Dudleya:

That's Bill in the base of a Giant Sequoia:

The snow in this photo is four feet deep!

From the grandfather . . . . The circle of life:

The growth on the left side of the center tree is the size of a Volkswagen Bug!

General Sherman is the largest tree in the world by volume and is estimated to be 2200 years old. Its diameter at the base is 36 1/2 feet, and it is 275 feet tall.

Full view of General Sherman:

A black bear walked toward us on the side of the road and then decided to cross. He was moving just fast enough to blur our picture. Seeing him was awesome!
