Welcome!

Thank you for visiting The Haley Hiatus, aka Travels with Barkley, where we're tracking our year-long 2010 travel adventure. We'll post pictures and journal entries as we travel the country by a wandering route from Pennsylvania to, ultimately, Alaska and back. If our trip captures your interest, please stop in occasionally to see what we're up to.

Clicking on a photo will make it larger and clearer. For most of the pictures, once the bigger picture comes up, clicking on it again will make it even larger.

Marina and Salinas, California

We moved on from Oakhurst to Marina, California on May 7th. Hills and wildflowers along the way:

We passed through miles and miles of strawberries, lettuces, and other plants we couldn't identify.

Our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean:

Marina Dunes RV Park is beautifully landscaped, and although the sites are small, they are well-planned and comfortable.

The park also fronts on the ocean, so it was a short walk to the beach.

Barkley had so much fun on the beach, but his legs gave out, so he rested a few times on the way back to our site.

Bill is a huge fan of John Steinbeck, so we went to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas.

Steinbeck and his standard poodle, Charley, traveled around the country in this truck and camper in the early 1960s. Travels with Charley was the result.

Steinbeck's boyhood home, now a restaurant:

Cute houses - now offices - in the same neighborhood:
